When will brands learn that manufacturing “Native American” products and calling products “Navajo” is not only grossly inappropriate but also extremely racist (and often illegal)?

I can’t believe that brands like Urban Outfitters and Isabel Marant perpetuate the disparaging of Indigenous Americans with inauthentic prints and designs.

Even more disgusting that Daily Candy encourages the wearing of these designs to THANKSGIVING no less.

Sad how much people forget what that holiday is really all about. And no Daily Candy, it’s not PIE.

In my ongoing pursuit to find Copper a toy that he cannot destroy, I bought him this today. It’s made out of firehose material. It lasted two hours.

Previously he disemboweled a bull made from two layers of luggage material. He devours tennis balls like they’re taffy. I resorted to bringing him fallen tree branches from Elysian Park because at least those are free. They also do not last. At this point I hope they soon make dog toys out of carbon fiber because there’s nothing else.

The only thing we can make last is the largest size black tough Kong balls (not the bones, those break too easily) and the largest size StarMark Everlasting Treat Balls. The trick is that these toys are as big as small melons and it needs to be something they can’t fully get into their mouths.

My friend Amit was just diagnosed with leukemia. He is one of the most positive, creative, caring, fun-loving people I know. Right now, Amit is in the hospital at home in Connecticut receiving treatment and far from friends in SF (where he lives) and NYC (where he used to live). We can’t visit him yet because of germs and the type of treatment he’s getting, so we’re stuck with the internet to send him good vibes, laughs, and hugs. Please help out!

It’s with heavy hearts that music fans bring in this long weekend - we just lost one of the most unique and influential voices of the last 40 years: Gil Scott-Heron. The poet, R & B artist, and hip-hop godfather was 62. In the 70’s, his blend of spoken-word soul covered issues of race, city life, politics. His wasn’t just a topical style though - his voice was nuanced and insightful. His classics include “We Almost Lost Detroit,” which dealt with the partial meltdown of a nuclear reactor in Detroit and “Home is Where the Hatred is,” a impassioned cry from within the depths oppressive inner-city. While he wasn’t always fond of hip-hop’s direction, his influence - implicit or explicit - is undeniable, most notably with his prototypical socially critical rap. Younger fans of contemporary hip-hop might recognize some of his music too, sampled by the likes of Kanye West, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, Blackalicious, and many more.

In 2010, he released the critically lauded I’m New Here, his first album of new material since 1994. Unfortunately, the resurgence in Scott-Heron’s career and, most importantly, his life, has come to a premature end. As summer season dawns, we remember one of the best who ever did it. Rest in Power.
