Ad Astra Per Aspera - “Voodoo Economics”

It seems silly to say I moved to Seattle and the Kansas City/Lawrence music scene is what I miss most about my time in KC, but it’s the truth. In Seattle there’s a national/international act playing almost every night that I’d like to see, so I haven’t even attempted to dig into where and how the local scene exists.

Named after the Latin state motto of Kansas, Ad Astra Per Aspera (“To the stars through hardships”) is a Lawrence band that I adore for their experimental abilities in making great rock music where a song could mean piano interludes, xylophones, folky slow rock vocals, chanting, surf rock riffs or fast tempos and screamed vocals.

Instead of looking for a local band to check out, I’m waiting patiently for the release of the 2 new songs they have posted on their myspace and rehashing the best from their 2006 release Catapult Calypso, “Voodoo Economics,” a perfect example of their smart and fast sound.
